Audiobook Description:

Detective Alex Cross must confront his most terrifying nemesis ever-and his own deepest fears-in this electrifying new thriller from the master of suspense, James Patterson.

Alex Cross has never believed in vampires. But when two joggers are found slain in a manner that suggests a macabre ritual, he has to reconsider. Someone believes in vampires enough to have committed a series of bizarre murders that appear to be the work of one. Local police are horrified, and even the FBI is baffled.

Cross takes on the case and plunges into a netherworld of secret clubs and role-players, a world full of poseurs and playactors-and someone demented enough to have crossed the line from dark ritual to real blood. At the same time, a lethal super-criminal from Cross's past known as the Mastermind is stalking him, taunting him, and threatening everything he holds dear. Cross has never been closer to defeat, or in greater danger. In a shocking conclusion, Alex Cross must survive a deadly confrontation-only to discover at last the awful secret of the Mastermind.

According to this book, here are James Patterson's 7 Golden Rules of Writing:

    1. Write simple sentences. Don't use big words or describe people wearing colors other than black or "powder blue."

    2. Dialogue should be monotonous. Have your characters say the same thing ... more...

The bodies of men and women are turning up all over the U.S. showing signs of attack by animal and human teeth. As it turns out, a pair of brothers who just so happen to also be vampires are responsible for the attacks. After years of working in a bookstore and making jokes about this author and the frequency of his books being released ("Every other Tuesday"), I felt a sense of duty to actually read one at some point. So, on a slow work day, I picked up a copy of this that a co-worker had left in the of... more...

This will be my last JP book. It seemed like a recap of all the other books and I kept thinking "why can't he come up with some new material??" I've read all the others and didn't need to spend another 8 hours recapping. Yes - there was a new pretty good story but I got hung up on the nume... more...

So I have been reading this series in order - determined to stick with this series until the end. But now that school is starting I am going to have to put the adult James Patterson books to bed for awhile so I can stick to the young adult literature that I really need to be reading. It's good tha... more...

This was such a fast and enjoyable read that I got though it pretty fast, about two evenings of reading and once done I was ready for the next book, that's what I love about them the most, the need to know more and more, endings are never satisfying enough when it comes to Alex Cross books. The main... more...

This was a book club book. I had heard some pretty horrible things about Patterson and was prepared for a boring and predictable reading experience. I can see, even from this one book, how this may be true if I were planning to trudge through his entire series. However, as a singular reading experie... more...

I absolutely LOVE all of James Patterson's work, and I actually had the honor to meet him. I really enjoyed Violets Are Blue because it is part of the Alex Cross series and I really like his character. I also really enjoyed this novel because I have a fascination with vampires - REAL vampires - and ... more...

Well when it comes to vampires, this is probably as realistic as any vampire story on the market, but I'd rather one of Anne Rice's old scary stories or Stephanie Meyer's recent series any day. This one is not just scary it is nauseating in detail. I learned to pick up on the gore and skip several... more...

Pretty typical plot. Not very well written suspense or action. Lots of superfluous writing/narrative musings where nothing is happening and the plot/story doesn't move along. The real story seems to be cut short to extend the psychological fantasies and face offs of the main character and his nem... more...
